This is a companion volume to ‘Nick Schlee Paintings 1987-2008’. The same lush appearance, size and feel. This time devoted entirely to Schlee’s drawings and oil pastels showing work as early as 1958 chronologically through to 2010. Over 300 illustrations are reproduced including early still lives, sketches of his family and a series of figure drawings done in colour oil pastels. Many of the drawings parallel the oil paintings done at the same period seen in the companion volume and give a good idea of how close his painting technique is based on his on the spot drawings. Both share the same vigour and energy that gives energy to his work Speed of execution and and a heightened feeling for colour in landscape permeate the work. A few pages at the end of the book give an indication of the many other subjects he has recorded in his sketch books from trips to Vancouver, Majorca, Rome, Paris and The Austrian alps. The book is an interesting insight into the development of an artist throughout his life. All the pictures derived from intense observation together with a determination to put down as powerfully and quickly as possible the essence of what is before him. A page at the end of the book has quotes from the artist about his drawing philosophy and practice.
This is a book to feast the eye.
